What is Kakejiku?
The Kakejiku (掛軸) is a Japanese hanging scroll featuring an artists unique interpretation of traditional Kanji in the art of Calligraphy. Not to be mistaken with “makimono” (巻物) - which is meant to be unrolled and left flat on a table - the kakejiku hangs on wall as part of the interior decoration of a room. In Japan, this is traditionally displayed in the “tokonoma” (床の間) alcove of a room, which is especially designed to exhibit prized objects.
Taking care of your Kakejiku
It’s important to note that Kakejiku are vulnerable to UV. Please avoid displaying your Kakejiku in direct sunlight, as continued exposure will degrade the materials and cause the calligraphy ink to fade. The high-quality yet delicate paper is also sensitive to strong moisture, and the fabric is not washable. To avoid damage to your Kakejiku, please avoid places with poor ventilation, bathrooms, powder rooms, or placing your artwork directly in front of an air conditioner.
